Susan Boyle’s first Britain’s Got Talent audition began with giggles from the audience. It ended with the same crowd on its feet.
Boyle was 47 when she appeared on the show in 2009. During her introduction, the Scottish singer said she wanted to become a professional performer and named West End star Elaine Paige as the artist she hoped to emulate. Her answer drew amused reactions around the theater, and the judges seemed unsure what to expect.
She had chosen “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables, a song that depends on control and emotional clarity as much as vocal strength. The moment Boyle sang its opening line, the mood changed. The laughter stopped, the audience listened, and the judges’ expressions softened into surprise.
Her voice was full and assured, with none of the hesitation that had marked the conversation before the music began. She let the melody build naturally, saving her strongest notes for the song’s emotional peaks.

By the final note, Boyle had received a standing ovation. Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, and Piers Morgan all voted to send her through to the next round.
The audition brought Boyle international attention. She finished the competition as runner-up to dance group Diversity and released her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, later that year. Sony Music says it became the United Kingdom’s biggest-selling debut album of all time.
The footage records the reversal in full: giggles during Boyle’s introduction, silence after she begins to sing, and standing applause when she finishes.
