My Sister’s Name Lit Up My Husband’s Phone at 2:47 AM

Post draft — Part 1 of 2, ends on cliffhanger · ~310 words

My sister’s name lit up my husband’s phone at 2:47 in the morning. The message said: "Delete this."

I stared at the screen until it went black. Six years of marriage, and my hands had never shaken like that. Jenna is not just my sister — she’s my best friend, my maid of honor, the godmother of my daughter.

I woke Mark up. He read the message, and his face did something I’d never seen before. Not guilt. Fear.

"It’s not what you think," he said. That’s what they always say.

"Then tell me what it is."

He couldn’t. Or wouldn’t. He grabbed the phone, deleted the thread, and held it against his chest like it might explode.

The next morning, I called Jenna. Straight to voicemail. I drove to her apartment — nobody home, but her car was in the lot, and through the window I saw two suitcases by the door. Packed.

At Sunday dinner, my mother asked where Jenna was. Mark’s fork froze halfway to his mouth. "She’s… dealing with something," he said quickly. Too quickly. My mother looked at him, then at me, and changed the subject. Everyone at that table knew something I didn’t.

That night I couldn’t sleep. I did something I’d never done in six years — I opened Mark’s laptop. In his email drafts, unsent, was a message to a divorce lawyer. My name was in the subject line.

I felt the floor tilt under me. So it was true. All of it.

Then the front door opened. Jenna walked in at midnight, the two suitcases in her hands — and a manila envelope with my name written across it in Mark’s handwriting.

"Don’t say anything," she whispered, "until you’ve read what’s inside."
