PART 2
Daniel copied the file onto a thumb drive without a word. His hands were steadier than mine. When he slid it across the desk, he didn’t let go right away.
“Mr. Whitaker, there’s a reason I asked you to come alone. It isn’t only what’s on that video. It’s what happened after.”
I waited.
“Around eleven forty on Saturday night, a man from your son’s wedding party found our AV technician, Toby Reyes. Toby’s twenty-four. Good kid. The man offered him five hundred dollars in cash to wipe the hallway camera. Said the bride had a wardrobe problem near the suite and she’d be humiliated if anyone saw.”
“Did he take it?”
“He took the money. He started the overwrite. Then he stopped halfway, because something about it felt wrong. He didn’t sleep Sunday night. He came to me Monday morning with the cash in an envelope and asked me to call the police on him if I needed to.” Daniel rubbed his eyes. “Our IT contractor pulled what survived. You saw the part that survived.”
“Who was the man?”
“He introduced himself to Toby as the bride’s brother. Grant.”
I remembered Grant. Tall, easy smile, expensive watch. At the rehearsal dinner he’d given a toast about “little Cassie” that made the whole room laugh. I had laughed too.
“I’ve managed weddings for nineteen years,” Daniel said quietly. “I’ve seen drunk uncles and fistfights over seating charts. I’ve seen brides cry for an hour over the wrong shade of napkin. I have never seen a groom do that to his mother.”
Then he opened his desk drawer and set a small velvet pouch in front of me.
“One of our housekeepers, Rosa, found this Sunday morning. It had rolled under a radiator in that corridor. She thought it might belong to the woman in the video.”
