Chapter 6
So much of the truth had survived by accident, tucked into the corners of other people’s carefulness.
I called Claire that night and asked if she’d consider staying on with the company in some capacity — not as Adrian’s ex-wife, but as someone who understood the books better than almost anyone left standing. She said she’d think about it. Three weeks later, she took a position overseeing vendor compliance, the same area Northstar had exploited, and within six months she had built a verification system thorough enough that nothing like it could happen again without triggering four separate alarms.
My mother started coming to family dinners again — smaller ones now, just the two of us and occasionally my wife, Sarah, who had spent the last year watching me carry a story I’d finally been able to put down. I didn’t fully forgive Adrian. I’m not sure I ever will, not completely, and I’ve made peace with that. But I stopped needing to. Forgiveness, I learned, isn’t actually required to move forward. What I needed was the truth, and I finally had it, documented, witnessed, and unshakeable.
Northline kept growing. Vantage, after an uncomfortable few months of internal review, renewed their contract — Preston Vail told me privately that watching how I’d handled the worst night of my professional life had told him more about my character than five years of quarterly reports ever could.
I split my time between Chicago and Ohio after that, rebuilding Mercer Auto Supply’s finances with Teo and Claire, restoring what Adrian had hollowed out, modernizing what my father had been too stubborn to touch. We kept the old printer anyway, retired now, sitting in a glass case near the front office with a small plaque that Teo insisted on adding without asking me first.
Sometimes the smallest details tell the biggest truths.
I read it every time I walk through that door, and every time, I think about a hotel conference room, an envelope I almost didn’t take, and a recording that took four months and one very brave woman to bring into the light.
